For the home gamer, stationary dedicated console video game systems offer powerful gaming capabilities compared to handheld systems. Some console systems have other benefits also, such as the ability to play DVDs and multimedia files from your computer. Popular console units include Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

Console systems typically consist of a core unit which contains a cpu and ram, a video display such as a tv or monitor, handheld controller input devices and an electric power supply. Game media such as cartridges or DVDs contain the software which runs on the unit. Online games also require internet access.
